This major retrospective at the Royal Academy brought together works spanning more than four decades of Antony Gormley's practice, alongside a series of new installations that transformed the galleries into immersive environments exploring the relationship between body, space and architecture.
During my collaboration with Antony Gormley, I developed a number of computational design and fabrication tools used across several works in the exhibition. These included generative systems for the development of new sculptural pieces and bespoke digital workflows that translated complex geometries into buildable structures.
A particular focus was Matrix III, a large suspended installation composed of an interlocking aggregation of steel space frames. I developed digital tools that enabled the generation, rationalisation and fabrication of the structure, ensuring that a highly complex spatial composition could be realised as a buildable and constructible object while preserving its conceptual and visual intent.
The exhibition demonstrated how digital design, fabrication and material experimentation can support the creation of immersive sculptural environments that challenge conventional perceptions of body, space and scale.
